Presidential Cartoons
During campaigns and elections you can see hundreds of political cartoons posted about the candidates themselves. However, once a candidate is selected and inaugurated, the cartoons change. The cartoonists will find the smallest physical feature to emphasize as well as pick apart policy and personal beliefs. These cartoons are often shown to shed light on issues that may not be in the news as much.
The cartoon to the right is that of former President Bill Clinton. This cartoon shows Clinton as his normal caricaturized form with the big wide chin, however, other feature are added to Clinton's face. Clinton was obviously known to be a ladies man with his numerous affairs being a matter of public record, this artist decided to put hearts on the American flag rather than stars as well as the multiple pair of lips smooched on his face. This cartoon is of former President Richard Nixon. The cartoon shows Nixon in his famous campaign pose with both arms up and hands in the form of the "peace" symbol. His left hand says his personal slogan "V for Victory." The right hand says "Watergate Cover Up." The Watergate scandal caused Nixon to resign as President of the United States thus ending his political career but sparking the political cartoon career for dozens of cartoonists. |
This cartoon was created during the debates of 2012 for president hopeful, Mitt Romney. Had Romney won the election, this could have possibly been the part of his personality that cartoonists would have picked on most. Throughout 2011-2012, Mitt was accused of being what is known as a "flip-flopper." This cartoon shows eight identical representations of Romney behind podiums. Each podium is labels with a different "hot topic." The theme of the cartoon is that of which Romney does not have an opinion on the subject, rather will change his mind depending on who he is speaking with. |
